This week we’re highlighting a Spring/Summer 2011 trend that we’re holding on to, tightly, maybe forever, probably at least for a few more seasons.

As any street-styling person will tell you, layering is one of those tricks that can upgrade a so-so look into so much more. But the notion of wearing any more than 3 layers in tropical heat is well, kind of silly. Nothing like melting into liquid human inside a coat, on a cardigan, over multiple tank tops on a five foot way somewhere.

So were we psyched when we saw Kimono Jackets- slinky, soft cover-ups that toe the line between actual-Kimono and put-together-pajama-robe! The possibilities of putting this over, under, between other garments are endless. With a relaxed silhouette, interesting prints and billowy sleeves, they can instantly brighten up jean-shorts and a basic top, and on other days, be the game-changing twist in an elaborate, Susie Bubble-type layering exercise.

Here’s how it went down: During last year’s spring/summer 2011 shows, several designers, chiefly L’Wren Scott (top picture), Dries Van Noten (second picture), and Haider Ackermann (third & fourth pictures) showcased slouchy, dramatic styles for their Asian inspired shows. High street brands picked up and translated the trend into easy-breezy jackets, prompting droves of style-loving bloggers to rock the look.

So far, we’ve seen them thrown over lots of jean shorts and short dresses, but I particularly like them on maxi things or flared pants for that extra punch.

If you’d like to get your very own, here are some pieces we found online.
