Organized as part of celebrating Singapore’s leading Chinese daily newspapers, LianHe ZaoBao’s 90th anniversary by FIDé Fashion Weeks, Fashion Week 2013 was held last Saturday at Marina Bay Sands. Overall, it truly was a good weekend for Singapore.

The event was opened by an energetic modern dance sequence and it showcased eight Singapore labels (Josiah Chua, J-A-S-O-N by JR Chan, L’il Aux Ashby by Rayson Tan, Mr Howard by Tsai Ming Hung, Max Tan, A.K.A Wayward by Mun Foong, Reckless Ericka by Afton Chan and Louis Koh and Chen Zhigang) and 10 students from the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts, the students’ designs took inspiration from the newspaper and featured brushwork, prints, and motifs.

Known as Singapore’s most avant-garde couturier, Frederick Lee presented his 29-ensemble Spring/Summer 2014 collection and got Emily Hwang, (socialite and owner of the newly-opened MCM Singapore) to walk the runway. She was flanked by two tattooed ‘devilkins’ (how cheeky!)

His collection ‘Death And Destruction’ was all about darkness and despair (obviously you can’t expect rainbow & floral prints with show named that). His designs were different permutations of black – tonal blacks, texture-on-texture blacks, shimmering blacks, matte blacks mixing luxurious materials of fox tails and leathers with silks and satins, embroidered and crystallised delicate fabrics and adding dramatic feathers, some of which are hand-painted and some delicately stitched.

Closing the fashion show featured a collaboration of Julien Fournié and Singapore’s most successful and well-loved online store, Love, Bonito. It showcased the perfect mix of high street fashion and street style. With an almost 80’s vibe with vibrant bold fashion pieces, the collection definitely made heads turn. To end a good night, Rachel Lim and Viola Tan (co-founders of Love, Bonito) walked down the runway and managed to receive loud applauses from everyone at the show.

It was clear at the end of the Singapore’s Fashion Week, it was a proud moment not just for the designers but for everyone who attended the event.
