IKEA seems to be heavily influenced by various sub-cultures this year. After taking a cue from yogis, the Swedish furniture giant has launched a streetwear-inspired collection that’s available in store starting May 1st.
Collaborating with LA-based designer Chris Stamp (founder of Stampd, an avanstreet lifestyle brand), IKEA’s limited edition SPÄNST collection has something for both your urban dwelling, as well as for your active life.
Following Chris Stamp’s signature monochrome style, SPÄNST features items that serve to show off your streetwear collection, such as a mesh wardrobe, transparent shoeboxes for your beloved sneakers, and a shoe rack that can double up as a skateboard holder. “As a fashion designer, I know that people want to show other people their clothes, shoes and accessories. Why spend a lot on a pair of sneakers and hide them in the closet?” remarked Chris.
There are also cool, unexpected items inspired by Stamp’s own active urban lifestyle, such as a basketball hoop and a skateboard. “I grew up surfing and skating. Here in So Cal, skating is more than transportation. It’s a culture and an intimate part of the Stampd DNA. I’m honoured to get the opportunity to design the first skateboard ever at IKEA,” said Chris Stamp.
Whether it’s a clothes rack, shoe box, duffel bag, or a hoodie, streetwear enthusiasts will have fun choosing an item from the SPÄNST collection. (It’s also your chance to get a Chris Stamp product at an affordable price – the designer’s Stampd brand t-shirts are normally being sold for USD68 / RM267 and above.)
Oh, and the designer’s own favourite item? The LED light stick that can be clipped onto the wall, or leaned against it. “The light is just an awesome piece. You can use it in so many different realms, and the fact that you can charge it with your USB makes it really flexible – whether it’s on your own wall with your smartphone adaptor or with your computer.”
