Between discovering and supporting fresh local talent and staging shows for internationally renowned designer houses, Singapore has fast become the fashion capital of Southeast Asia. Staying on top requires constantly upping your game, and for 2013, though we’re not sure how it even managed to, Singapore sure has. Start booking your flight tickets, because here are our picks for the events you can’t miss this year.

Fashion Steps Out 2012
Fashion Steps Out is literally what’s available in stores on Orchard Road, strutting out onto the busy boulevard (last year the event saw Abercrombie & Fitch models walk down in nothing but their jeans; attention ladies!). Aside from the fashion spectacle, it’s a great opportunity to see how designerwear handles the streets. This event spans out for about six weeks, so you’ve plenty of time to plan when to go!

Date: March 28 – May 12 2013
Venue: Orchard Road

It’s been 20 years since the first Great Singapore Sale was launched, and we have a feeling that this year’s is going to be bigger and greater than ever. We’re talking exclusive anniversary promotions and privileges given out to shoppers of the sale, thanks to MasterCard, so you might want to keep an eye out for that. One in particular that caught our attention, and that we’re saving up for to contend in, is ‘The Biggest Spender Reward’. And because shopping should never ever be restrictive, know that the sale doesn’t just apply for fashion-related goods – health, food, electric appliances, and many more will go on promotion too.

Images taken from Asia Fashion Exchange 2010 & 2012

Comprising four pillar events (Blueprint, Asia Fashion Summit, Audi Fashion Festival and Star Creation), the Asia Fashion Exchange (AFX) was initiated for the sole purpose of placing the Asian fashion industry onto an international stage. Which is also why AFX is acclaimed to be the fashion gateway for Asia – besides creating bonds between business partners and pleasing the eyes of trade professionals, AFA also satisfies the wants and needs for every fashion lover present. Attending AFX will be incredibly beneficial for the young and aspiring talents as there are brainstorming sessions and design competitions, and you also get a chance to network with people whom are part of the industry; take as many name cards as you can. Need we also mention that Caroline Herrera, Tsumori Chisato and Hussein Chalayan will be among the 16 designers to present their Autumn/Winter 2013 collection at AFF this year?

Date: May 16 – 19 2013

If you enjoy spending your time off watching E! and reading tabloids, be sure to mark this date down.

Essential Eames

The Essential Eames exhibition will be making its way down to Singaporean shores for the first time ever this June. It will showcase Ray and Charles Eames’ works of art in furniture, architecture, films, never before seen images, and early examples dug out from the Herman Miller archives. A great example and inspiration in form, structure and simplicity across designing fields, this one’s for the art fan.
