Skincare rituals for the uninitiated may come across as fussy routines that cost too much for something seemingly skin deep. For those of us who have been or are blessed with generally manageable skin, we spend more time and money chasing the tails of new skincare fads than establishing a proper routine with products that matter.

A proper skincare routine which includes proper cleansing (read: remove your makeup!) and moisturising can help your skin learn to take care of itself. Just like dental care, a twice yearly visit to the dentist is not going to eliminate the need for daily brushing!

We spoke to two real warm-blooded women who founded their skincare routine in the need to care and repair to find out what routines meant for them.

Jasmin Thum, 34, is the multi-tasking make things happen person at Bluebots Sdn Bhd. We had a quick chat to find out more about her relationship with skincare and what a skincare ritual meant for her. Establishing a skincare ritual meant the day-to-day integrity of the skin was managed which eliminated her need for regular use of medicated products and frequent visits to the derm.

How long have you been a La Mer user?

I started using Creme de La Mer in 2000, so it’s almost 12 years now!

What is your favorite product?

I started off with Creme de La Mer, but I don’t actually use it as often now, because our humid weather here is quite forgiving on my dry skin, so I have supplemented it with the gel and lotion version instead – especially on very hot days, or when I know I am going to be outdoors and perspiring a lot.

How were you introduced to the brand?

I saw it in ads and reviews in magazines when I was in college in the States, and decided to try it, since the reviews were so positive. I couldn’t actually afford it [as a student], but the best thing about beauty counters in departmental stores back then was that they gave out really good samples and the sales persons were really generous as well, so I constantly dropped by the La Mer counter to fleece the samples off them! Although that wasn’t very sustainable for a product I knew I was sticking to. So I started paying for my own as soon as I could afford to.

How did you choose your favorite moisturizer?

In college, I had such dry skin that it was peeling and I also developed white, dry patches on my face because of the extreme cold weather. I saw a doctor, who prescribed me Hydrocortisone cream, but this topical cream can’t be used on a long-term basis, so I had to find an alternative. I read about Max Huber and Creme de La Mer, and I decided to give it a try, which turned out to be the best thing I did – my dry, flaky skin disappeared, and there were no more white patches.

What is your skincare routine like?

Every morning, I wash my face with a non-foam cleanser, then apply toner, serum, eye cream, moisturiser and sunblock. I also just stared using the Clarisonic brush recently, about two to three times a week. At night, I remove my make-up using a cleansing oil, then wash my face with the non-foam cleanser (to double cleanse). I apply the usual toner, serum, eye cream and moisturiser – I don’t use any night cream, but I think it’s time to start!

How has your skincare regimen changed since establishing a routine?

I didn’t use any moisturiser on my face prior to using Creme de La Mer, but after that, I don’t ever go without moisturizer. Even if I am sometimes a bit lazy with sunblock!

What is your Creme de La Mer ritual?

I know I am meant to warm the creme in my hands – to stimulate the key ingredients – prior to application, but it seems like such a waste of richness on my hands, so I actually warm it on my face instead, by patting it gently all over my face.

Jasmin wasn’t the only one with a story to tell about the importance of a routine. 33 year-old chef and owner of Bistro à Table Isadora Chai, was introduced to skincare through a rather traumatic experience. Though clearly under control, Isadora still has the battle scars to show for it. Since then, she has established routines that is simple but with products she finds most effective.

How long have you been a La Mer user?

I have been a La Mer user since 2005.

What is your key La Mer product?

The Concentrate.

How were you introduced to the brand or product?

I was attacked by an Alsatian who bit my face. My mom kindly gave me some of her Crème de La Mer.

How would you describe your experience with the  Crème de La Mer?

The results are unbelievable. I love the stuff.

What made you choose La Mer as your favourite moisturiser?

I was told that it was great for scars, according to my aunts who also swear by it.

What is your skincare regimen like?

Cleanser and serum.

What is your Creme de La Mer ritual?

I place some on my palm and spread it around while rubbing my palms together, then I slap my face with the stuff and rub whatever’s left on my neck.

Drop that snail slime fad and the serum your friend swore was unicorn magic and tell us more about how your skincare routine helped your skin.
