1. Ask A Stylist: Rachel Lamb & Denver Leong

Posted by Claudia Low on April 12, 2012

Welcome to a brand spanking new TiC regular, Ask A Stylist, where the dynamics are simple: you share, tweet or e-mail fashion-fangled dilemmas, and we get a professional stylist to solve them for you. A little overexcited, we employed the expertise of not one, but two Topshop Personal Shoppers for our inaugural post – Rachel Lamb of the Knightsbridge outlet, as well as Topshop Mid Valley’s Denver Leong – to troubleshoot your styling woes with items they have instore.

What can I pair my new Timberland high-top boots with for a slightly more formal look?

We’d suggest off-setting rough and tumble boots with a little girly flare. ’50s-inspired dresses and A-line skirts work great for this silhouette, alongside a pair of leggings or skinnies to lengthen the body. Always remember to tuck the skinnies in! Play with colours, or up the femininity with a flirty chiffon top and midi skirt. The idea is to dress as if you can skip through any weather or circumstance – so have fun.

Where can I get and how can I pull off a bustier despite a bigger bust?

Topshop has a variety of bustiers this season, so please, drop by! Bigger busts taking on the bare midriff trend can be a little tricky. We’d suggest layering it under a light or sheer shirt, with several buttons undone to show off your assets. A loose cropped top is always the safest way to go, while an unbuttoned blazer can be a sexy way to suit your bustier up.

I can never layer heels with a pair of socks like the pros. How can I attempt this style?

The key is in the socks – always think less chunky, and opt for the thinnest pair of socks possible. There’s a great glittery pink pair at Topshop. We personally like sheer socks that show off a great pedicure on wedges, or under kitten heels with more of a point at the toe. Ease yourself into the trend by experimenting with brogues.

What’s the best kind of top to wear with straight-cut jeans to avoid looking sloppy?

The easiest pick-me-up is to pair them with an embellished top and a great pair of heels. A frequent look you see on Highstreet is a sequinned blouse under a slouchy blazer and a pair of straight-cuts with pointed court shoes. Très chic!

How can I take on a pencil skirt? Also, are peplums for a specific body type?

We love the idea of dressing down a pencil skirt! Try it with a loose top (in light fabrics like jersey or chiffon). If you’re going sheer, tuck in the blouse for a cinched, more put-together look.

Unfortunately, peplums do look better on people without hips because they accentuate that particular region. The general rule of thumb to cinching is to have it gathered around the waist rather than fanning out if you’ve got a curvy bottom.
