With Urbanscapes 2012 just a few days away, we’ve all been a-tizzy over the exciting activities we have planned for the day. We’ve given you a teaser for what to expect on the day, but today we break down exactly what to expect at the CrossStitch: Levi’s® x TiC Young Designer Showcase. The four chosen budding designers will be showcasing two of their existing designs, as well as crafting a brand new look that will incorporate a ready-to-wear Levi’s® item, together with a refashioned piece from old Levi’s® castoffs. Here’s a sneak peek of what the designers have ready for festival-goers come November 24th and 25th!

    Julia Leong

Figuring out a career path as a teen is a rite of passage for many, but for Julia Leong, the career path wasn’t so much discovered as it was paved in solid concrete by high school. A prelude to the many titles she would come to possess under her belt, Julia first had her taste of design success in high school after winning the uniform design competition in 2007 held at her alma mater – a win that is still seen on the backs of current-day Clifford International Canadian High School students.

The fashion enthusiast, who went on to pursue her dreams of fashion design at SML Academy in Kuala Lumpur under the deeply influential principal, Tan Choo King, has since gone on to gain some impressive wins in the local industry among them Best Casual Wear Designer Award at the Malaysian International Fashion Alliance week in 2008, finalist at the Malaysian Footwear Designer Competition in 2010 and Best Evening Wear Designer Award at the SML Fashion Graduation Show 2011. In 2012, Julia was a participating designer who showcased her creations at a fashion show in Chengdu, China.

    Moodboard for Julia’s CrossStitch creation

For her Levi’s® CrossStitch creation, natural organic shapes will be meshed with modern symmetric geometry in a collection titled ‘Georganic’. Creating 3D-inspired looks using felt and net in bright colours – the result will be a collection that is light, beautiful and lends an air of constant euphoria.

    Andy Yap

Flamboyant and glamorous designs are synonymous with Andy Bandy, the brainchild of Andy Yap. Inspired by his mother, whose background includes interior design and a stake in the florist business, Andy found his love for art and beautiful surroundings in fashion design. And what a way he has come, with the Limkokwing Institute graduate taking home the grand prize of Best Emerging Designer of 2009 at the Mercedes-Benz Stylo awards cementing his place as one to watch.

Constantly pushing the limits of creativity in fashion, Andy was one of the first Malaysians to experiment with an avant-garde fashion video in 2010. His sumptuous leather and fur creations on the runways of Malaysia-International Fashion Week also drew collective gasps from the audience when he showcased in 2011. At Urbanscapes, Andy will be debuting and selling his diffusion line, Abby by Andy Yap, which will surely earn the love of the urban stylista. Channelling the fashion week trends and adapting it with Andy’s take on classic lines, don’t miss out the goods which will be located at The Lab.

Incorporating the metallic purple skinny jeans in his Levi’s® CrossStitch creation, Andy will be creating a look that matches the the modern and contemporary rock star feel to it. Expect to see only the coolest biker jacket, embellished with a little patch and studding for some patented sexy edgy Andy Bandy action.

    Eddie Cheow

Having found inspiration from his mother who was a tailor and the likes of fashion greats, Cristobal Balenciaga and Nicolas Ghesquiere, Eddie Cheow embarked on a journey to explore his passion for design at Carven Academy of Fashion. Learning the craft of pattern-making, sewing and design, Eddie applied his skills to competitions and found himself the second runner-up of the Malaysia Young Designer Competition by MODA in 2008.

Finding inspiration in a myriad of disciplines, photography, art, architecture and nature, Eddie has honed his design skills to be applicable to many different things. A beer bottle resulted in his win as ‘Best Kronenbourg 1664 Inspired Outfit’ at Malaysia-International Fashion Week 2011, while the Samsung mobile phone gadget evolved a ‘Best Galaxy SIII Flip Cover Design’. With plans to launch Tint, his custom-order menswear line in 2013, the future looks to be a bright one for this budding designer.

    Lorenzo Peh

Lorenzo Peh is a young designer whose love for avant garde designs is currently being built upon at SML Fashion Academy. Since 2009, Lorenzo has steadily been building a name for himself in local competitions, placing as a finalist in the MODA Young Designers Competition, Malaysian Footwear Competition and i-Style KLIA in 2010.

Having took home the grand prize of STYLO Emerging Designers Competition in 2011, Lorenzo gained the opportunity to travel and showcased his collection in exotic locales like Jakarta, London and India. Currently, he is working on his latest ready-to-wear collection for MODA 2013. Lorenzo will also be selling his ready-to-wear designs at the Young Designer’s tent at Urbanscapes.

The designer, who prefers to keep an air of mystery around his CrossStitch creation has simply this to say when asked what festival-goers can expect: “It’s inspired by deformed bodies – extra limbs.”
