A harmonious (sorry, we couldn’t resist) marriage of music, theatre and seriously glammed up costumes, what’s not to love about musicals? The more flamboyant, the better we say. Enter Burlesque, a small town girl meets the big city formula with equal parts sparkly sequins, fringing and soaring vocals thrown in for effect. Headed by a couple of somebodies you might have heard of who go by the names of Cher and Christina Aguilera, expect a star-studded cast.
A huge change for Aguilera who’s used to playing herself in movies, Burlesque is her dramatic feature debut in which she plays Ali, an overworked and underpaid waitress who leaves her dusty town for LA with little ambition when of course, she gets enthralled by the burlesque showgirls in the club she ends up working at. The feel-good film follows her climb to become the venue’s main attraction, throwing in a love interest and some drama in between.
Just like any other musical film, toe-tapping tunes can be expected, made even better with OTT costumes. With Michael Kaplan (whose futuristic-noir look for Blade Runner inspired a McQueen collection) in charge of the costumes, Burlesque stays true to its title, with boned corsets, the heavy use of rhinestones and lush feathers at every turn.
OPI recently collaborated with the film in their Holiday 2010 collection in which the first half goes sultry, comprising shimmery varnishes in varying degrees of warm metallic’s and not-so traditional reds. The second half of the collection focuses on glitz and sparkle, offering varnishes packed with multi-coloured hexagonal highly reflective glitter.
