  1. A Capital Radio Station for Women

Posted by karen wong on July 24, 2012

A radio station by women, about women, for women? That’s one for the gender equality police. When Capital FM debuted in December 2011, the news made a splash for its highly female-centric position. Boasting a roster of female talents that include stalwarts like acclaimed comedian, Joanne Kam; host and writer, Xandria Ooi and new up-comers like, DJ Patricia K, the entire affair, though well-received, had a tinge of doubt to it. After all, didn’t it just seem this side of gimmicky to draw gender lines for something as communal as a radio station?

As it turns out, why yes, we do indeed need something like this. Perhaps it’s the nature of the radio station, but if you’ve ever tuned in you’ll know that no other radio station is quite so attuned to total mind, body and health well-being. And not just for women, mind you, but across all gender divide. While pop culture trivialities may be the topic of conversation at other radio stations, the DJs at Capital FM88.9 share generously with lessons for the modern folk.

From Asha Gill’s ‘Eat. Love. Play’ segment that befits the urban high heel warrior, sharing cooking tips amidst the ongoing discussion of juggling career and life, to April Kuan’s ‘Jazzscapes’, a unique weekend show that is unparalleled in the depth and breadth in music selection, this station empowers through knowledge – knowledge of self, music and modern day living. Interviews with chefs, authors, and fitness instructors reveal tips and tricks to arm yourself with.

Like the the proverbial elder sister who guides and nurtures, the radio station also serves as a shoulder to seek counsel from. Priscilla Seelan in the nightly ‘Groovedown’ segments poses as an Aunt Agony, providing a listening ear to relationships and assorted life problems. It’s a safe haven where problems can be discussed and counsel seeked from peers – girl talk 2.0, if you will, given the use of Facebook as the virtual slumber party here.

Taking the action off-air, Capital FM88.9 has treated listeners to a day out about town. Titled Diva’s Day Out, it’s an all-out girls-only bash that lets ladies feel like a queen for the day. At their most recent splash, ten lucky ladies and their friends were treated to the ultimate diva experience; we’re talking spa, massages, good food and even a RM500 shopping voucher for Parkson Pavilion. So what’s your take on Capital FM88.9? Have you added it to your radio tuner or is it still waiting to be discovered? You can stream them online @ www.capitalfm.com.my or even download their mobile apps at Google Play (Android users) and App Store (iPhone users).
