New On The Block: Never Follow Suit (MY)

by on .

Never doubt the power of a ‘yum cha‘ aka hang-out session over drinks; it turned four good friends’ dream into reality – the birth of an artsy fartsy boutique named Never Follow Suit. True to its name, Never Follow Suit boutique is definitely one of its kind that carries a variety of vintage and modern clothes for both men and women. Situated in the Greater Klang Valley fashion capital of Bangsar (Jalan Telawi), the boutique was recently launched early this month.

The creative people behind the refreshing label of Never Follow Suit are good friends: Calvin Cheong (stylist), David Shaw (hairstylist), Joe Chia (fashion designer and stylist) and Victor Goh (stylist).

As I climbed up the stairs to the shop, I was surprised to see the very interesting and unique display of mannequins outside for which I wasn’t expecting at all. That certainly got me excited to make my majestic entrance to the boutique!

Wall of fame: Black and white photo collage

Upon entering the boutique, I was greeted by the retro tunes of the ’80s which was playing on the vinyl record player as well as one of the masterminds of Never Follow Suit, the friendly Joe Chia (pic), who is a fashion designer and a stylist. He was very nice to give me a tour around the boutique and even styled me in one of their latest pieces.

Dresses from the 30s to the 80s as part of the boutique’s deco

The boutique has 3 sections with three different styles: vintage, urban and minimalism. All three areas have different interiors to fit each respective concept while still remaining to its main concept of championing coziness. The idea for this is to create an unforgettable nostalgic experience for the customers.

REVOLUTION

Revolution Area carries vintage pieces from the 50s to the 80s. Most of the pieces are DIY-ed with additions like studs, tussels, lace.

Joe’s hot pick from Revolution area: military buttoned up shirt , RM 299

For women: Black sleeveless with ruffles top, RM 159; Navy green skirt at RM 169

Most of the garments in the shop are all below RM 300 except for some which can fetch up to a thousand ringgit, depending on the fabric, design and intricacy of the garment.

COLOUR ME

The warm and cozy deco instantly makes you feel that you are at home in the boutique.

This section carries an array of colourful urban pieces. The colour palette reminds me very much of Jil Sander Spring/Summer 2011 collection.

Joe’s pick: Brilliant blue jumpsuit, RM 189

Joe is wearing yellow cardigan (RM 229) from Colour Me Area.

I had the opportunity to try on some amazing pieces from the shop that Joe hand-picked for me:
Olive green cape jacket is one of the expensive pieces in the shop that is going for RM 699.

This versatile green dress (RM 229) can be worn in four ways: a short/long dress or a sleeve/sleeveless blouse.

Besides clothes, the boutique also takes in vintage clutches and handbags. Vintage bags price ranges from RM 199 to RM 599.

FOR MEN AND HIS WOMEN

The last section of the shop would be the minimalistic corner or better known as ‘For Men and His Women’. From the wardrobe to the interior are all kept clean and simple.

Joe’s hot pick for the minimalistic section: black 3-pocket jumpsuit at RM 249.

Joe’s pick for casual formal: Sheer outer (RM 129), Polka-dot blouse (RM 119) and Black shorts (RM 149)
