Rounding Up the Noughties: One Decade of Asian Fashion

The noughties are closing in and it seems like we have seen such great developments in the fashion industry of South East Asia in these 10 years. Although it has always been an unconventional field, fashion has fought through for acceptance in this region and it will only get better. So before we countdown to the start of a new calender,  let's take a look at some of the turning point in fashion - the past decade, in South East Asia!

On the very last night of the Malaysia International Fashion Week 09, Gwen and I were milling around gathering our wits after the star-studded BDA Gala when who should we see standing outside but Tinie, the M-IFW'09 Female Model of the Year. Of course we couldn't give up the opportunity to interview her and she kindly gave us some of her time. We also snagged a quickie with Malaysian supermodel Tengku Azura!

M-IFW09: BDA Jewel of the East & Men's World

BDA fashion designers showcased their skills and craftmanship in the "Jewel of the East" on the last day. This is the second time BDA has been honoured their opportunity to participate in the MIFW, based on the tremendous success of its previous involvement in 2008. The showcase featured ten talented designers for both men and women garment.

Global fashion shakers and makers flocked to the Malaysia-International Fashion Awards (M-IFA) Gala and Awards Presentation night to witness fashion showcases from top local and international designers. Drawing huge cheers from the crowd were the collections of Dato' Farah Khan, YSL, Pucci and Dato' Bernard Chandran, as well as the Malaysian fashion industry's equivalent to the 'Oscars', the M-IFA Awards Presentation. The Born with Style showcase which highlighted the collections of Villiam Ooi, Hazree Wahid and Gallo by Thian started off swiftly with great aplomb when the models for Villiam Ooi's collection marched out at the start of the runway in his designs. Their actions, much like the designs demanded full attention from the audience and marked a great start to the showcase that highlights three of Malaysia's most promising designers.

The Couture Inspirations showcase which happened on Day 3 was one that highlighted Malaysian style haute couture. High end fashion with intricate detailing was given a dash of local culture with the usage of traditional fabrics and designs. The three brands that showcased their intrepid design-making skills were David Fung, N.A.F.I Collezione and local shoe brand N.Y.C. Come see what happens when East collides with the West.

One of the most exciting show to watch during MIFW has got to be the 10 Rising Stars M-IFW 09. It features 10 of the hottest designers just breaking through in Malaysia.  Instead of the usual showcase of collection after collection, official sponsor for M-IFW 09 - Maxis, decided to amplify the showcase by conducting a challenge where  the the 10 chosen ones had to design an outfit for a doll to match  the exclusive MIFW 09 mobile accessories from Maxis - which was displayed upon entering the Bukit Bintang Entrance of Pavilion.

After great excitement and much fanfare from all corners of the local fashion scene, the Malaysian International Fashion Week (M-IFW) kicked off to rousing support from a packed crowd. Now in its 7th consecutive year, Malaysia's most high-profile fashion event started out with a fashion show from MaxMara and Diane von Furstenberg Autumn/Winter 2009 Collection on Wednesday night. Yesterday's morning event, 'Curtain Unveil', highlighted 8 designers that were making waves locally - Amir Luqman, Glitz Glamour, Jimmy Lim, PU3, Oscar, PEGG, Syomir and LyndaRahim KL. With Ai Tominaga officiating the catwalk as the first model out, the show was off to a great start.

Yesterday I attended the launch of Malaysia-International Fashion Week 2009 (M-IFW09) and I am so excited to share all the hot news related to the upcoming fashion week with you! M-IFW09, presented by Maxis and organized by mifa, Malaysian International Fashion  Alliance,  will be happening this year from the 4th to the 8th of November 2009 at the official venue, Pavillion KL. Malaysian International Fashion Week finally closed last Saturday with the announcement of recipients for the MIFA 2008 Awards. Designer of the Year went to Sonny San, and Model of the Year went to Gwen Loo, whom Tongue in Chic has interviewed before. Kyuan scooped up award for Best Evening Wear, Julia Leong took home the Best Casual Wear award, and Michelle Hee won two awards - Most Promising Designer of the Year, and Best Avant Garde.

Besides the Truly Asia show which we've blogged about, another show many were looking forward to was Ten Rising Stars presented by Envy magazine. These ten designers are not names we are unfamiliar with, their involvement in various fashion shows, contests and TV shows propelling their brands into fashion media.

MIFW / MIFA Day 1 - Truly Asia

First day of Malaysian International Fashion Week 2008 kicked off with Truly Asia at 11am, showcasing 11 different designers from all over Asia (there were supposed to be 12 designers but Arabella Ramsay from Australia was a no-show on the day).

MIFA  stepped up their game this year with a sleek and sexy black runway, with oversized chandeliers hovering above. Deborah Henry emceed the opening show, standing out against the dark backdrop in a shimmery silver Jimmy Lim maxi dress.
