You tried what? That’s probably your first question. Exilis Elite is an award-winning, FDA-approved non-invasive aesthetic procedure using radio frequency waves to tone and tighten the skin and even enhance the growth of collagen.

There are two types of treatment under the Exilis label: one targeted at facial rejuvenation, and the other at body contouring.

Ideal for those aged 30 and above for the prevention of ageing, and for those who need a pick-me up without serious surgery, Exilis Elite is one of the more exciting new technologies in the world of aesthetic beauty.

For the experience, I head to The Life Clinic, where I’m greeted by a very friendly and informative Jess, who is to be one of the aesthetic technicians working on my skin. The waiting room is decorated in minimalist chic and flooded with natural daylight. Before long, I’m ushered in to speak to Aesthetic Physician, Dr. Serina Abdul Latif, who is a poster girl for her clinic, with her flawless skin, smile and demeanor.

The Consultation and How the Technology Works

Dr. Serina examines my skin, as is the usual procedure for any first-time patient, and we discuss objectives. While my Hello Kitty cheeks have delivered a certain youthful outlook that has served me well in the past, the forces of gravity (and indeed the perils of life!) have created nasolabial grooves that simply did not use to exist. My jawline has also seen better days, as have my eyelids.

Dr. Serina ascertains that I have no implants in my face (as heat is involved) and tells me what to expect during the treatment. She explains that the treatment utilises radiofrequency to heat the deeper layers of the skin, whilst protecting the outer layer. Heating without damaging the outer layers of skin causes microscopic changes to the tissues and collagen growth. From even the first treatment, collagen will begin to remodel in the depths of the skin, and rejuvenate, causing new collagen cells to grow.

This will work to address droopy eyelids or jowls, sunken cheeks, lines in the nasolabial folds and around the mouth, double chins and loose skin in the neck areas. (Oh, the joys of adult womanhood!)

While a series of 4 or more treatments – depending on the patient’s needs – are encouraged for optimum results, Dr. Serina confirms that some of her clients have seen visible results even from just one treatment. The best part of all – there is no downtime (some patients may experience a mild redness that subsides 1-2 hours after the treatment), and no pain (the heat is akin to that of hot stone massage therapy).

I tell Dr. Serina I’m game and am led to the treatment room.

In the Treatment Room

The treatment room is what you would expect from a spa or a facial salon as opposed to the cold ambience of my (very expensive) dermatologist’s office, which I’ve had the misfortune of experiencing in the past – with the loud fluorescent lights blaring, my every pore quivering under his disapproving expression.

Dr. Serina’s warmth and friendliness, and the availability of treatments such as Exilis Elite is proof that skin health, technology and the aesthetic industry as a whole have come a long way indeed.

After changing into a facial robe, I lie on the treatment bed where my skin is cleansed and prepped for the machine. A senior technician enters and introduces herself and takes some ‘Before’ pictures. She explains that the treatment will be conducted in increments – on one half of the face, followed by the other. The focus areas: forehead, cheeks, eye area and jawline will receive 6 minutes of radiofrequency respectively. Within the 6 minutes, heat will increase gradually, reduce, and start over again.

The treatment begins. A cooling gel is applied to my face, where skin will come into contact with the the radiofrequency ‘wand’. The wand is attached to a machine and feels smooth and rounded (the ‘hot stone’ reference was pretty accurate) and warm. At certain points, such as my forehead where there are less layers of fat, the heat got to be too much, feeling much like I had accidentally touched a hot metal pot. The technician adjusted the levels according to my comfort and the rest of the treatment was spent in relaxed and quiet repose.

Post-treatment Skincare

At the end of a good part of an hour, Jess takes over. She cleanses my face of the gel, applies a multi-vitamin serum and proceeds to apply a powder mask for calming and soothing the skin. The room darkens and I’m left to enjoy the mask in quiet bliss.

After about 15 minutes, Jess removes the mask and cleanses my face. This is followed by a simple massage, topping the facial with La Mer’s The Concentrate, specifically designed to activate the skin’s natural healing process and soothe agitated skin.

Some ‘After’ shots are taken and the treatment is complete, with Dr. Serina checking in at the end to see how my skin had reacted to the process.

The verdict

Apart from a clearer jawline, already visible immediately after the first session, my skin was smoother, with pores less visible, and it also felt more toned and taut. There was no redness or swelling, though this may differ for others. I can imagine the effects would be amplified after 4-6 treatments.

Do’s (to remember if you’re trying Exilis Elite)

  • Do get a basic facial several days before, if you can. Skin that’s in good shape and not clogged or scaly is always better able to respond to treatments.
  • Do drink lots of water at least the day before and the day of your treatment. The more water you hold in your cells, the more buffer you will get, and your skin will tolerate higher heat levels and a higher radio frequency setting. After all, if you’re paying for a treatment, why not maximise it?
  • Do slap on your SPF sunscreen for added protection.
  • Do avoid the sauna, steam room or going out in the sun for at least 48 hours after.
  • Do moisturise well and put your hydrating serums or oils, and masks to work after the treatment.
  • Do get a consultation with a dermatologist or aesthetic physician to ascertain how appropriate the treatment is before you make your decision.

Don’ts

  • Don’t exfoliate excessively, do a peel or anything that could irritate skin prior to the treatment, such as scrubbing or even sunbathing.
  • Don’t start your Exilis Elite treatment if you have an active skin disease or infection in the area treated.
  • Don’t undergo the treatment If you are pregnant.
  • Don’t, if you have any implants (metal or otherwise) or electrical devices in your body e.g. pacemakers.

Apart from Exilis Elite, The Life Clinic has a host of other skin treatments from basic facials to a long list of state-of-the-art solutions for skin health, maintenance or anti-ageing treatments at comparatively reasonable rates.
