At the end of the year, after all my friends based overseas are back in town, it’s an annual tradition of ours to converge our calendars and have one weekend devoted to a sleepover. In the hallowed bedroom, we catch up over a year’s gap in each others lives, sharing all the intimate details that electronic chat and emails could not convey.
Perhaps its the age old protocol of sleepovers coupled with the overload of estrogen but our bonding extends to beauty practices as well. This year in the spirit of going green, I’m thinking it’s time we cook up some beauty remedies homemade style. Here’s some recipes I’m thinking of trying out that’s cost-friendly and super simple to make.
Given that laziness rings dominant in my DNA, and aren’t sleepovers meant to be an effortless exercise in indulgence anyway (or is that just me?), the DIY beauty recipes that I’ve listed here require very little preparation and effort but the payoff is plentiful. You merely need to raid your fridge to find the ingredients and without need for mixing or mashing, you’re good to go.
Face the Fun
With its pore-minimizing and essential ingredients like protein, omega fatty acids and vitamin, it’s no wonder that the simple egg remains one of the best tool in DIY beauty secrets.
DIY Egg Mask
- Simply crack the egg and divide the white from the yolk
- Using a brush or your fingers gently spread a thin layer of egg white on your face
- Leave it on until it begins to tighten in roughly 15 to 30 minutes and wash it off in warm water
- Next, mix the yolk and repeat the procedure.

The two-pack punch of white and yolk will help tighten skin while keeping it smooth!
If however you have sensitive skin and are prone to reaction from allergens, opt for a honey mask instead. The soothing qualities of honey goes great on all skin types and won’t cause a negative skin response.
DIY Honey Mask
- Fill a bowl with hot water and put the bottle or jar of raw honey in it to warm up
- Place a cloth in warm water and apply to face for 5 minutes to open pores
- Using 1 tablespoon of the warmed up honey, smear it on face, massaging gently to increase blood circulation and penetration
- Wash face in warm water after 15 minutes

The properties in honey smoothes and stimulates skin. For best effects use Manuka honey that has antibacterial properties to reduce acne inflammation and skin redness.
Save Your Soles
While we verbally try to walk in each other’s shoes during the catch up, during the sleepover we’ll work on the conditions of our physical feet to boot. In this two part DIY foot scrub and soak recipe, you can give your battered feet some much needed love.
Be it tub or sink, make sure you soak your feet in style
DIY Foot Scrub
- Mix 1/2 cup of sugar with 2 tablespoons of lotion in a bowl
- Massage the mixture in your skin while exfoliating skin with the sugar granules
- Rinse with warm water and dry

The lotion will provide moisturising benefits while the coarse sugar granules allows for gentle exfoliation action. However, you’re not quite done yet though for it’s time to soak!
DIY Foot Soak
- Put 7 cups of warm water and 2 cups of milk in a tub
- Soak your feet in the mixture for at least 10 minutes
- Remove, pat dry and add on a dash of moisturising lotion to feet and you’re done!
The flowers are an optional addition!
Cleopatra is believed to have soak in milk during bath periods and if it’s good enough for the queen, it sure is enough for us! Milk contains good acids that penetrate skin to cleanse it. Hence, after the one-two punch of scrubbing and soaking, your feet will feel brand spankin’ new. As the cherry on top of the ice cream, indulge in a round of pedicures and manicures to end the DIY beauty session.

There’s a host of homemade recipes available online and in home remedy books so if you have any that you think would be great on a sleepover itinerary, please do share! I’d also love to hear other sleepover activities that you and your friends pull when together.
