If there was one beauty product to give you that ‘oomph’ quickly, it would be mascara. However, it is also the one beauty product that is hard to get right. Non-waterproof versions smudge, while waterproof versions take so much effort to remove.
In comes tubing mascaras. They are easy on and easy off. Perfect for looking good on busy months. It may not give you the va-va-voom of Helena Rubenstein or Diorshow mascaras but it definitely gives you a natural ‘oomph’ in a jiffy minus the pain of traditional mascaras. We bring you two of our favourite formulas for all budgets.
Why is it a crunch time beauty pick?
- Resists smudging on oily lids
- Does not flake
- Washes off completely with water
- Gives gorgeous glossy lashes
- No need to wait between layers
A word of warning, tubing formulas are different from traditional mascaras. Some methods of use may be counter-intuitive to regular mascara habits. Here’s TIC’s guide to handling tubing mascaras:
- Don’t wait for mascara to dry between coats. Work quickly, brush thoroughly
- Warm water, directly or on a cotton pad is the best cleanser
- Use heated curler after mascara has dried for better curl
We have also included a slideshow of images to show you how easily it comes off with warm water.
Chanel Inimitable Extreme
Chanel is one of the first few luxury cosmetic brands to include a tubing mascara in their repertoire. We love the “brush” for it’s flexibility and the ability to grip your lashes at the roots and the dark glossy effect.
However, this formula almost only removes with water – a problem if you wish to remove all of your eye makeup with makeup remover alone.

This is our favorite drugstore beauty discovery this month. It does everything it’s luxury counterpart does. The fluffy brush is bent in an S-curve allowing you to push the lashes upwards as you apply. Medium to long lashes can expect some level of curling even without using a curler.
This formula can be removed with oil-free eye makeup removers or micellar cleansing waters. We love it for it’s pocket friendly price, curling effect and makeup remover friendly.
Availability: L’Oréal counters nationwide.
Here we put the two to the test and show how water is all you really need to remove these tubing mascara formulas.
Mascara comes off with just warm water. Repeat process to remove leftover mascara.
