1. Beauty On Tuesdays: Make Up Base Comparison

Posted by connie de alwis on May 26, 2009

Make up base is a new essential for foundation wearers to help with better application and keep foundation looking fresh throughout the day. It’s basically a product, be it cream/liquid/balm/powder/mousse, that you apply before your foundation and after your sunblock for the stated reasons. For this week’s post, we’ll be comparing two make up bases that appear to be rather similar to each other but give different results. Look out for the unexpected winner!

Etude House Speedy Total Base Vs L’Oreal True Match Make-up Base

As if the pink tube isn’t cute enough, Etude House Speedy Total Base claims to act as a 3-in-1 multi function base: sunblock + make up base + foundation. The convenience is indeed very attractive given our need to rush for everything.

Out from the the tube, the peachy-beige base looks like clotted cream and becomes more balm-like as it gets spread. The texture feels fine but the tint seems to make the skin look a tad purple. Don’t expect this to be a foundation as it gives close to zero coverage that even sheer-coverage believers would not like.

I tried using this as a make up base… Bad idea. It did nothing to smoothen out my complexion or help my foundation glide on better.

It wouldn’t have mattered if I wore this or not since it made no difference whatsoever. At this point, I couldn’t be bothered with the SPF35/PA++.

Retails at Etude House outlets for RM35.90

I assume that by now you should already know who’s the winner of this battle. L’Oreal True Match Make-up Base claims to hydrate, smoothen and even out the complexion on top of keeping make up fresh all day. What can I say? It really does all it claims. The pale-beige liquid comes out from the handy squeeze-tube in a fine and luxurious texture that spreads beautifully.

Once the color settles, the base makes my skin tone look more unified and as it dries, my skins feels firm and smooth to touch. My dry skin loves how it helps lock in moisture so that my foundation wouldn’t look cakey and controls the shine on my nose at the same time.

Although you’d be tempted to wear this every time you use foundation, I’d avoid this for picture-taking days. There seems to be a white cast from the base that is only visible through pictures and not in real life.

Besides that, this is a good daily make up base. It would’ve been excellent if it had some sun protection.

It retails for RM35.90 and is sold at all L’Oreal counters in department stores only.
