Hayden Ng
The hardest thing in the fashion world, other than getting to the top, is to stay on top. Many designers have had their moment of fame, only to fall back into relative obscurity. It is part and parcel of the industry, which has such ability to make and break overnight that it is simultaneously fascinating and terrifying to newcomers trying to find their footing.
Perhaps these newcomers would benefit from the story of Hayden Ng, a
The self-taught designer (preferring sewing to studying!) started waiting tables right after his O levels while knocking on the doors of Orchard Road boutiques with his portfolio of drawings. He soon shot to fame, dressing Miss Singapore Universe in 1987 and opening his own boutique, Hayden in the same year.

Since then, he has not only showcased his designs at fashion events in
His niche lies in clean and classic dresses that stun with their attention to cut and detail. He designs for the modern, body conscious and self assured woman, offers many options in terms of dressy items that transit effortlessly from day to evening. His dresses always manage to transfix with their subtly sexy yet elegant prints, which blend perfectly with his penchant to work with silk and chiffon.

But perhaps aspiring designers would want to know more about his thoughts and inspirations during the design process. In his early years, as a fan of all things fashion related, he was inspired by the fashion illustrations of other designs in publications, or interviews featuring well known designers such as Karl Lagerfeld.
Now, he draws on every aspect of life including music, art, shows, and most significantly, people and their needs or requirements in dressing. This consideration of the consumer shows in his designs that are very flattering to the female form as well as the fact that his favorite part of the design process is visualizing on a creative level who the wearer will be. He also says that his affinity to working with silk and chiffon are out of consideration of wearer comfort as well as the hot climate in
Right now, Hayden is working on his AW 09/10 collection and a few theatre productions for 2009. He is also a very nice man and like we said a fabulous designer, so do check out his pieces over at his website, add his group on facebook for latest updates, or stop by his boutique. His designs are also available overseas in
Oh yes, he also wants to send a shout out to all aspiring designers out there via TiC. The message is to follow your heart and pursue your dream with passion. The journey will definitely be tough, but with patience and persistence, nothing is too lofty to be achieved.
