It was announced yesterday (June 8th) that Estée Lauder Companies Inc. have officiated an agreement with Lane Crawford Joyce Group for exclusive distribution rights to the Jo Malone brand in Hong Kong, Singapore, China, Taiwan, Macau, Malaysia and Indonesia.

Jo Malone is a household name in England affiliated with delightful fragrances, luxurious body scrubs, and rich bath products. Starting from her humble home, orders for her unique fragrances rose so quick that her husband and she realised they couldn’t possibly continue business from there. Their first store was opened in ‘94 on Walton Street in London, and got upped to the very sleek Sloane Street within five years.

Jo was one of the pioneers to dabble in Fragrance Combining, encouraging her customers to give a go at layering her fragrances or spritzing separate scents on different parts of the body (i.e. nape of neck and lower back). As non-conformity became more popular, her stores were filled with people testing and concocting scents suited for their individuality.

What probably made it easier is that all her scents smell fantastic on its own, and is light enough to be mixed as well. Think nutmeg and ginger for a spicy tinge, or tuberose and vintage gardenia for more floral undertones.

Personally, I’ve never sniffed a Jo Malone in my life, but reading reviews on the Red Roses Cologne by NYTimes (April 08) makes me reckon I will like it very much indeed. NowSmellThis and Wallpaper* also wrote on Kohdo Wood Collection, that was just released last April.

Jo Malone can be found across 17 locations in the UK alone, including making its presence in departmental superstores Harrods, Selfridges, and Harvey Nichols, besides standalone stores. Already available in other countries such as Australia, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Mexico, New Zealand and Turkey; the brand spreads its scent East by opening its first store in Asia today (June 9th) at Lane Crawford in Hong Kong.

The 450-square foot establishment will incorporate elements from the Jo Malone flagship store on Sloane Street such as the library-style shelves, linear glass bottles and signature gift boxes. The next five years will see Estee Lauder and The Lane Crawford Joyce Group working closely together to expand the brand across the region.

“Jo Malone is rapidly establishing itself as a powerful destination for knowledgeable consumers looking for high-end British-Chic and very tasteful products around the world, whether for self-consumption or for gifts with a classic yet modern twist. The Lane Crawford Joyce Group’s unique expertise at operating premium brands’ flagship stores in high-street and high-end malls will most definitely enable Jo Malone to create in this part of the world the undisputable success it has become in the UK,” stated Fabrice Weber, President of Estee Lauder Asia Pacific Ltd.
