Trend Talk Tuesdays: Slogan Tees

Filed In Fashion by mellissa lee | Comments: 7 | Views: 793

Slogan tees were so cool a few years back when it was customary to display a funny message written across your t-shirt. The trend died down for many years as the generation which grew up with them slowly grew older, and the more classy fashionable set declared them uncool – who wants to go around with words all over your chest, advertising a brand? But hey, it looks like the trend is back in full-swing again! What do you think, witty or tacky?

We have House of Holland to blame for the resurfacing of this yet another 80s trend, first pioneered by Katharine Hamnett who decided to put two and two together and use fashion as a means of producing mass communication and implementing social change. Me thinks she wasn’t aware of the impact of slogan tees on the fashion world, and now wishes that slogan tee statements were ‘a little less frivolous’.

I think that this is one trend you either love or hate. The thing about slogan tees is that they remind us of our tweenybopper days and how it was cool to brazenly display your thoughts splashed out on your chest – at least that’s what it does for me! Ah, and not to forget, the most popular ‘slogan’ of all – proclaiming your love for your significant other with those tacky ‘I Love My Boyfriend’ t-shirts. Although I’d probably still wear a slogan tee once in awhile, do you think this trend is a little too childish for you now that Generation Y has hit their twenties?

By the way ladies, NOTHING is tackier than those ‘I’m a Virgin – But This Is An Old T-shirt’ slogan tees that were all the rage a few years ago. If you have one, toss it, pronto!

Here in Australia, popular teenybopper brand, Supre, is one with the slogan tees. We’re talking hundreds of designs which range from naughty Christmas messages to messages proclaiming your love for Edward Cullen. Hmm, perfect for your little sister but maybe a little too tweeny for you?

So what do you think, ladies? Slogan tees – friend or foe?

And just in case you think slogan tees are the best thing that’s happened to the fashion world since Alexander Wang and want to get your hands on a few cute ones, here are a few places you can grab ‘em.

I reckon a classic is the "I'm With Stupid ones. Quite crass and primary school like humour, but it gets the job done!
