Just-for-Fun Fridays: Christopher Kane Beast Prints

Filed In Blog by claudia | Comments: 13 | Views: 1105

It's no secret that the entire TiC team was anticipating and salivating over the new Christopher Kane x Topshop line. Yesterday's release of the collection saw me heading over to Pavilion at 10.30am to purchase an oversized, ripped and snipped croc top for RM273. Yesterday also saw a plethora of local tweets - some loving, some hating Kane's penchant for beastiality prints. Since it was such a hot topic of debate, I thought I'd open up the comments box for you to voice out this Friday, just for fun.

Donatella Versace compared Kane to her late brother, Gianni, even after he had called her a diva. I suppose that encapsulates Kane's success in high fashion. While he's always been renowned for feminizing tough masculine materials with scalloped edges, Kane has also made sets of beast-printed t-shirts iconic.

Despite their critical acclamation, many pose different opinions to the prints, raging into what I like to call the "Beast Wars". Some find the prints tacky, gaudy and vulgar. Some see them as horribly overpriced (and to be honest, I have seen tees in Sungei Wang for less than a quarter of Kane prices but of course in cheaper workmanship and material). Others see them as art - from the colour selection, to the angle of placement. And some see them as iconic; as a fashion marker of our era.

So what say you? Do you think Kane's t-shirts are the epitome of fierce? A roaring success? Or do you reckon they look like souvenirs you get from the zoo?

Now that I've seen them up-close, I think they definitely look like souvenir zoo t-shirts. My cousin has this t-shirt from a Sydney zoo; it's black with an open-mouthed croc on the front. It wouldn't be too much to take it off his hands and with a little work, create an 'oversized, ripped and snipped' look for myself.

At RM273, there's no way I would pay for a top that reminds me of something I can get for way less than that at the zoo or Sungei Wang. It might look trendy now, but trends go away, and then where will you be with that hideous croc top that's worth triple digits?

I'm afraid that this is one fashion statement I must close my ears and eyes too. Sorry TiC, you guys can have all the Chris Kane tops you want.

kinda tacky and overpriced. fierce, definitely. but not exactly the most flattering thing. RM273 can be better spent on something else.

Buy a black shirt & some iron-on prints and DIY ! RM273 can get you plenty of nicer, non ferocious prints ! Goodness.

i beg to differ. the reptile tee works because of its colors and placement. it looks like a well thought design, unlike what most of you girls can make. or buy at places like sungei wang. but i guess most don't have enough taste to spot the difference between christopher kane and cheapness.

It is not overpriced to compare with its original Chrisopher Kane's which cost thousands. I would absolutely buy this tee but too many people have bought them already and I'm not going to wear the same tee as the person beside me who is wearing :)but I would buy the leggings :)

Eringhani, my thoughts were exactly the same, though I found out that only 8 pieces were brought in here. I was going to buy the leggings (actually, I still might), but I completely fell in love with the croc top's cutting and print. :)

Ck, I agree with you, but play nice. ;)

Fashion has always been subjective and Im glad to see all you girls have strong opinions about certain trends and styles. I personally like the idea, and if i didn't spend s much at Chic Pop Street Market, I would be proud owner of a Christopher Kane X Topshop anything simply because Im buying the name.

Without the 'Christopher Kane' label, would you still see the tees in the same light?

it is an iconic, statement piece that will last for ages. you are paying for a christopher kane work of art, not a t-shirt. and for those who can't fathom that, clearly you don't know jack, or appreciate even the slightest fragment of style, fashion and artistic expression.
