Upcoming Fashion Films
We’ve blogged about Coco Avant Chanel previously, but lest that film does not satisfy your curiosity of the mistress behind the House of Chanel, there is another. Hollywood seems to be having a love affair with fashion films so Tongue in Chic has decided to highlight some upcoming fashion films that we're excited about!
Coco Chanel and Igor Stravinsky (aka the other Chanel film)

Incidentally picking up right where the former movie ends, Coco Chanel and Igor Stravinsky progresses the life story of Gabrielle Bonheur “Coco” Chanel by focusing on her tumultuous affair with the Russian composer, pianist and conductor, Igor Stravinsky.
In this movie based on Chris Greenhalgh’s book, Coco & Igor, Anna Mouglalis (a Chanel model since 2002 herself) plays the role of the iconic designer. Set amidst the backdrop of her affair with Stravinsky, the film will chronicle Coco’s attempts to democratize women’s fashion as well as the birth of the well-beloved Chanel No. 5. The movie was made with the support of the House of Chanel and Karl Lagerfeld so you can expect some fashionable ensembles in this film.
You can watch some excerpts from its screening Cannes Film Festival here or if you don't mind French, the trailer can be viewed here.
Beyond Biba

Biba was highly instrumental in creating the ‘70s Brit-chic look that was best exemplified by Twiggy and Brigitte Bardot. Although the brand did not outlast the time period it reigned king in, Barbara Hulanicki, the driving force behind the brand, went on to carve out a successful career as an interior designer, recently dipping her toes back in the fashion design industry with her collaboration with Topshop. The documentary, Beyond Biba: A Film Portrait of Barbara Hulanicki, gives audiences an insight into Barbara the woman, designer and legend.

The September Issue

R.J. Cutler boldly goes where no one has gone before – tackling the industry giant Vogue and its renowned editor-in-chief, Anna Wintour. Made in 2007, the movie covers the 9 months leading up to the creation of the infamous September fall 2007 issue that totaled in at a whopping 840 pages. Shot with full cooperation from Anna Wintour and the rest of the staff, the documentary will give us an insight into the daily workings of the widely considered ‘international fashion Bible’. We’ve seen the caricatures in The Devil Wears Prada and Ugly Betty, so here’s a rare chance to see the real deal in action!
Valentino: The Last Emperor

While this documentary may not be new, it has yet to receive distribution outside the United States. Perhaps a little too high fashion for the likes of our local bootleggers but if you can get your hands on this film, prepare to witness the spectacle of the Italian brand and its designer. With contributions from major designers like Giorgio Armani, Karl Lagerfeld, Donatella Versace and Diano von Fürstenberg, the film is a testament to the influence of the man behind the brand.
Bruno

The inclusion of this movie may be highly contentious among the fashion purists. While he may not wield as much influence as the iconic people mentioned above, Sacha Baron Cohen’s fictional Austrian fashion reporter has been giving people the chuckles since his first appearance on Da Ali G Show. He’s got about as much to do with fashion as Katy Perry has to do with actual singing talent but for what it’s worth, the satirical character and his wild outfits casts a shock onto the fashion community highlighting the humorous side to fashion. Imagine him with an actual programme on E!. How much more entertaining will all those shows dissecting fashion crimes be?

Short films at the Venice Film Festival 2009
With the success of their previous short films by fashion designers, the Venice Film Festival aims to premiere, among others, Edoardo Winspeare's Les Noces de Papier for Louis Vuitton; La Scarpa by Andrea Rovetta for Ferragamo, and Paris-Moscou by Karl Lagerfeld for Chanel. Not directly related to fashion but American designer Tom Ford, will also unveil the movie he directed A Single Man, at the festival. Fashion, film and art have always enjoyed an interconnected relationship so these films screened at the film festival simply solidify that truth.
Sex and the City 2
The franchise needs no introduction after 94 episodes on TV and one very successful movie in 2008. Like the saying goes, "If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it," so on May 28 2010, we will see a sequel to the first film. I’m itching to see what crazy get-ups Carrie will be sporting in this movie. Until then, tide yourself over with this photo of the thousands who attended the open casting call for the movie. Amongst the queue stands a potential 'Girl on Telephone' or 'Waiter in Restaurant'!

Did we miss out on any upcoming fashion films that you’re just itching to watch? Tell us about it in the comments!
