Chic Movie: Coco Avant Chanel
Opening in Hong Kong cinemas on 11th June, is the anticipated biographical French film about one of the fashion history's most well known icons - Gabrielle "Coco" Chanel. Directed by Anne Fontaine, Coco Avant Chanel stars French actress, Audrey Tatou, of Amelie and Da Vinci Code fame as the great fashion icon.

The movie is an adaptation of the Chanel biography by Edmond Charles-Roux and chronicles Chanel's early years from her humble beginnings as an orphan in Paris, before she became to be known as one of the world's most famous fashion designers.

The film has already garnered some controversial attention in Paris since its screening on 22nd April 2009. The French transport authority banned the film's posters (as above) depicting Tatou as Coco Chanel holding a cigarette whilst in bed, as they were "unhealthy and inappropriate", and consequently, forcing movie producers to provide an alternative poster. In real life, Chanel herself was known to have smoked several packets of cigarettes a day for most of her life.

With Karl Lagerfeld supervising the re-creation of costumes and accessories for the film, we expect that Coco Avant Chanel will be on the must-watch list for every well-heeled fashionista in Hong Kong.
