  1. Reebok X John Maeda @ Sole What (KL)

Posted by karen wong on September 11, 2009

Not many people can claim to straddle both the mathematical and creative fields equally and excel in both of them, but then again, not everyone is John Maeda. The acclaimed artist, graphic designer, computer scientist, mathematician and current President/CEO of the Rhode Island School of Design has been named by Esquire magazine as one of the 75 most important people of the 21st century. Can you blame Reebok for picking this guy to share an ongoing collaboration with?

The first collaboration between John Maeda and Reebok, the Reebok Timetanium, was a global success with all 100 pairs of shoes selling out within 14 hours of first launch. Each subsequent line has been received with equal fanfare and it’s no stretch to say that John Maeda’s designs are highly sought after the world over.

For the current Affili’Art Collection, John has channeled principes from his book, The Laws of Simplicity, and kept his designs relatively minimalist and simple. Yet of course, the shoes carry the token elegant complexity attached with someone with a mathematical and creative mind.

The Reebok ERS 500 Maeda is modeled after the first principle in John Maeda’s book. Described as “thoughtful reduction”, white leather is given a sleek finish with metallic silver highlights.

The second shoe design, the Retro Aztec Maeda, is based on the principal of “In simplicity we trust”. The shoe is a callback to classic designs that forego excess details and colours, instead championing a minimalistic and timeless appeal.

Both shoes are available exlusively at the Sole What, The Gardens, Mid Valley City. The Reebok ERS 500 Maeda retails for RM429, while the Retro Aztec Maeda is priced at RM399.
